Stratonovich invented the stochastic calculus, an alternative to the Ito calculus; the Stratovonich calculus is most natural when physical laws are being considered. I met Stratovovich in 1996 when he visited King's just after one of his visits to Nottingham, where he collaborated with Belavkin. They both shared the Russian State Prize (the sequel to the Lenin Prize) in 1996.
