Laurent Schwartz

Laurent Schwartz is the inventor of the theory of distributions, which has played a large role in quantum field theory and other branches of applied mathematics. Whereas Dirac invented the Dirac delta-function and its derivatives, Schwartz made it all into respectable mathematics.
