Peter Higgs

Peter Higgs was a post-doc at Imperial College while I was a research student. He was (at that time) trying to quantise general relativity. He is world famous, having a particle, the Higgs boson, named after him; it has not yet been observed. See his lecture, "My life as a Boson"; just wait a few minutes for the movie to download.
