First, see My Life as a Boson?, by Peter Higgs.
I first met Goldstone at CERN, while we were both Fellows there in 1960. He had just produced his thesis, which discussed a quantum field theory with a broken symmetry, and which predicted the masses (zero) of the boson modes of the model. Goldstone was apologetic, that the prediction of zero mass, for some scalar particles, did not agree with experiment. I, however, was very impressed that his theory predicted anything so definite for the masses.
