The Fields Institute
The Fields Institute
is in Waterloo, and is a research centre for all branches of mathematics. The IMU (the International Mathematical Union) however, is responsible for the awards called the Fields Medals
(and prize) for mathematicians under 40 years old whose work is
the judged the best in the world. About four such medals are presented every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The medal is equal in prestige (but not in monetary value) to the Nobel Prizes.
