Constantin Carathéodory, mathematician

Carathéodory worked in analysis, but also reformulated the second law of thermodynamics in terms of differential forms. Boyling has shown that this work makes the implicit assumption that the manifold of states has no cohomology, since it does not distinguish between closed and exact forms.
