Local gauge models predicting their own superselection rules

by J.-L. Bonnard and R. F. Streater; Helv. Phys. Acta, 49, 259-276, 1976.

ABSTRACT

By considering local SO(2) or U(1) transformations of two component Boson fields in two-dimensional space-time we construct certain non-vacuum representations of the canonical commutation relations between which superselection rules operate.

The models suggest that a widening of the axioms of Haag, Doplicher and Roberts is desirable in certain gauge models.

REMARK

This is the same work as an earlier version except for the appendix. Some people have commented that I should have included the appendix as part of the joint work, and not written it under my own name. However, my coauthor had died, and I did not wish to give the impression that the contents of the appendix were known to either of us before the date of submission of the article.
