H.
Araki has worked on quantum field theory, and together with R. Haag has stressed the idea of local observables in
physics. His book, published by Oxford University Press, is worth
buying. He has also made great progress in the theory of factors in von
Neumann algebras, and has also some results on C*-algebras. For
example, he (and D. E. Evans) has shown that one of the axioms for
C*-algebras,
traditionally used by mathematicians, is redundant, in that it follows
from the remaining axioms. His contributions to statistical physics are
also phenomenal.
He was the first president of IAMP and
drew up its statutes.
