The
Mathematics Department is housed on the Strand site
in central London adjacent to Somerset House, which overlooks the Thames
and sits midway between Westminster and the City of London. The outlook
from the Student's Union - upstream to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament,
downstream to St Paul's and Tower Bridge, across the river to the South
Bank Arts Complex and the recently reconstructed Shakespeare Globe Theatre
- is one of the great London views.
The
British Museum, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, the City and
the West End with its theatres, cinemas and night clubs, are all within
easy walking distance. Covent Garden is just up the road; its open-air
restaurants, shops, markets and street entertainments make it one of the
liveliest meeting places in Europe.
It is not recommended to travel to the Strand by car, but there are
many good connections
by underground and bus inside and trains
from outside London. Train schedules for can be found at the National Rail Web Site.
